With more money we  will have the security of knowing we can provide bereavement care packages to anyone who needs one. Supporting anyone aged 16-24 living in Norfolk.

How We Began

Alex Gough started with an idea in 2017 that she wanted to start a bereavement charity helping young people who live in Norfolk to cope with the loss of their loved one. In January 2018 her vision became a registered charity called Take Our Hand.

Alex founded the charity following the sudden death of her boyfriend in 2011 when they were both just 19. Having never experienced death before, Alex struggled with her grief and with no one around her who could understand how she was feeling she went looking for help. Unfortunately she couldn’t find the support network of similar people who could help her and so struggled to deal with it on her own.

Alex received counselling but felt it was the fundraising and taking part in sporting activities that really helped her deal with her grief and something that still helps her today.

Alex was fortunate to have amazing friends and family around her who tried to help and kept her on the right track, picking her up when she went through very low moments. Being aware that not everyone has that around them and that without those people Alex is sure her life would have taking a a very different path she founded Take Our Hand to be that support to people.

Our Vision

At Take Our Hand we understand how difficult it is to be a young person, so when you add a bereavement to the mix it can have a detrimental effect on them, their lives and those closest to them. This is why we want to help young people across Norfolk who are going through a bereavement. We believe that all bereavements have an impact on someones life, be it a parent, friend or colleague, they are all hard to deal with.

We felt that there were already many charities that offer counselling to help someone through a bereavement but there aren’t many offering other ways to help. Which is why Take Our Hand was formed.

We offer support through alternative therapies and through activities such as art, music and gardening.

We also feel its important for those going through a bereavement to have the support of others who can understand what they are going through. This is why we run both online and face to face support groups.

We believes there is no time limit on grief and therefore no time limit on the service we provide.

Our Project

Our project has come from the need to change following COVID-19 as we needed to adapt and be able to support those going through bereavement in a different way as to begin with no face to face treatment could take place.

Although some restrictions are beginning to lift we are still looking to send out bereavement care packages to those in Norfolk aged 16-24 who are going through a bereavement. Not only because face to face contact is limited but also we want everyone going through a bereavement to have access to this package. Not everyone will want or feel able to reach out for formal support but by providing this care package they can know they are not alone in this and that there is support available should they want it.

Each care package will consist of some nice treats including chocolate, sweets, bubble bath, sleep spray or games as well as some items for more practical support including a memory jar, candle, journal and mindfulness activities.

We hope these packages will help to bring some comfort and support through what they are going through.

The money being asked for will be enough to fund 200 care packages
