To enrich the lives of disabled people by providing them with a weekly fun swim where they can develop physically, mentally and socially.

by Norman Leach in Bexleyheath, England, United Kingdom

Our team of volunteers has been providing a weekly swimming session for people with disabilities for over 50 years, but in 2013 the local council withdrew their funding and since then we have had to raise £10,000 a year to pay a reduced rate to hire the swimming pools (large and small pools) at Crook Log, in Bexleyheath.

Our service users benefit from both the physical and mental stimulation provided by swimming sessions and develop their social skills around adults and children both with and without disabilities. They can relax with friends, family and carers in a safe environment. The activities help reduce isolation and provide an opportunity for people of all ages with disabilities and their families to make new friends and have fun.

To see the smiles on the children's faces and the calming effect that the water has on them is truly amazing.

Our weekly sessions bring joy and build confidence with children who struggle with the day to day tasks that children without disability take for granted,  and it also provides some respite for their  parents.

If you are someone with a disability or know someone with a disability you will also know that life is not a level playing field. But at Bexley Beavers, in the water we are all the same height.

And our team of volunteers are committed to providing  this  service for as long as we possibly can.

Users say:

“my son looks forward to Friday evenings, it is fun, he has made new friends and is exercising. He is usually the first in the pool and the last to leave – he loves it here”

“after major back surgery Bexley Beavers enables me to move in the water to strengthen my muscles without worry”.

"I love Friday nights" James aged 6

"I'm going to be a Lifeguard one day" Emily aged 9

Raising £2,500 will secure the service for 3 months and benefit over 1,000 people - we have a large membership and because it is a casual session members can dip in and out as they please. A normal Friday evening sees between 80 and 100 people in the pools.
