To provide people on very low incomes, and children growing up in poverty, with free, recycled bikes to help them exercise and travel safely

by Sara Newson in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom

New stretch target

With additional funds we'd be able to refurbish more bikes, focusing on bikes for local children. 50% of children in Byker (where we are based) are growing up in poverty. A bike provides freedom and fun as well as healthy exercise.

Recyke y’bike’s core purpose is to get more people onto bikes as we believe that bikes are brilliant for everyone and can address lots of social issues. Bikes are low cost, great for the environment, brilliant for physical and mental health. Anyone can learn the basic mechanical skills needed to fix a bike and these skills can be transferred to other settings. Bikes provide freedom, independence and fun.

The way we get more people onto bikes is by saving unwanted bikes from landfill and recycling them to sell (at a low cost) or giveaway to people in need. We also provide training in a range of settings and at a range of levels so that more people have the skills needed to keep bikes safe, well maintained and on the roads.

Covid-19 has resulted in unprecedented demand for bikes, particularly from families with very limited access to outdoor space. We've also seem more demand for bikes from people who need to exercise for health and well being and from those working in the care sector on very low incomes who are anxious about using public transport during this crisis.

We want to be able to help everyone access the joy and freedom of riding a bike, plus the financial and health benefits, regardless of their economic status. We can provide the qualified and experienced labour to turn unwanted bikes into safe and fully functioning bikes but we need your support to purchase replacement parts and key accessories.
