COVID-19 has been particularly challenging for children from disadvantaged families. We have launched an additional way to support them, with more people coming forward to volunteer in the community, and to help reach more children, whilst our existing face to face volunteering has pivoted to online, whats app etc, and snail mail, alongside activity packs, fruit packages, laptops, birthday and Christmas presents etc.
Our team are introducing an additional interactive pen pal support service so as to help more children in need, and to engage the extra volunteers that have come forward, this will include DBS and reference checks, training and guidance and monitoring as well as skilled matching of the children to volunteers. This will act as springboard for expansion to meet the increased need.
Once we are able then this volunteer team will then be ready to move to regular weekly face to face support of children in need, and engage in greater range of activities, so as to give these young people the opportunity to increase the confidence, self esteem, and have fun undertaking exciting/interesting challenges and experiences that they would not otherwise have they would have the opportunity to do.
The Friendship Project is an award winning charity, long standing, having helped over 1.500 children since founded in 1986, and is in their 35th year this year. Overall we are looking to raise £35,000 from sponsorship and donations to mirror their coral anniversary. We were recipients of The Queens Award in 2019, which was presented just before the the lock down in February 2020, to a gathering of our long standing volunteers, supporters, trustees, and our dedicated operations team. This is a fantastic accolade for a small charity, and will give you confidence that any funding donated will give a direct impact to our beneficiaries.
