Steps has been described as a lifeline by the families who desperately need the service in the East Midlands. The service has been running since 1994 and hundreds of children during this time have benefitted from the outstanding support that it gives. It has always been a Face to Face service based in Shepshed, Leicestershire.
Steps has now found itself sailing in unchartered waters through unprecedented times due to Covid-19 and we have had to sadly close our doors to the families.
The families that attend Steps are very reliant on the service that we provide and closing down completely would never have been an option for us. We have had to completely change the way that we work with our children and develop a bespoke package of online resources for the children and families so that we can continue in our essential work.
As well as creating support videos and written guidance, we are now running regular online Zoom group sessions. They are extremely popular and offer ongoing support for the whole family. We need to consider the most appropriate online group for each family that might not necessarily be their usual group, recognising slightly different needs for online sessions as well as individual constant change and progress of each child. In addition to these structured sessions we also designed ‘Steps Chatter Box’ sessions, open to all families, offering a chance for the families to see other Steps families, not necessarily attending the same session for structured sessions. This widens the families’ support circle. The ‘Chatter Box’ sessions are very relaxed and relatively unstructured, a combination of circle/greeting time and snack time. It is a time to say hello to all families, to catch up on any of their news, and an opportunity for all of them to speak to each other too. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Steps session without lots of singing! The siblings also love to participate in the fun!
We have realised the benefits of offering our service in this way is immense and therefore we wish to continue to offer a flexible service into the future so that families have a choice of bringing their child into Steps or staying at home and taking part in a streamed session.
We shall open our doors again for our lovely families and this is where this funding will really help Steps!
The money that we raise will be utilised to support the salaries of our much loved and respected staff team members. Without our team of highly qualified professionals Steps just wouldn't be the Steps that families know and trust to support their child. This year our charity has lost extensive, much needed funding from the publics Fundraising initiatives and this money will help us to remain a viable service for the people who need it most.
'Until we meet again'.
