New stretch target

We could support more children and more schools if our reach funding target was met.

1613573517_copy_of_matrec_literacy_project.pngMaTReC Literacy Project is aimed at supporting dyslexic adult learners to reach their full potential.   There are 2 strands to our project the first is to continue the work we currently do with adult dyslexics in offering specialist 1-1 tuition and support with learning to read, write and spell, this has worked really well over the past 2-3 years and we feel this is a model that can be used within schools in the Manor & Castle and surrounding areas of Sheffield, to support children with literacy difficulties.   The second strand of the project is supporting children with literacy difficulties in the same way  by offering the same specialist tuition and support services to schools in the form of after school clubs and training teachers and or teaching assistants to support children with dyslexia better in the classroom.  Anyone with dyslexia, English as a second language or general literacy and or learning difficulties will benefit from this project.  The project will also be keen to trial the services on offer with children who are English as a second language speakers as the specialist software we use suggests that it can be beneficial to children in this category also.  We would like to run the project in a trial school within Sheffield over 2-3 school terms to enable us to accurately capture the data needed and to track progress in the different cohorts of children undertaking the project.  A consultation will take place with staff within the trial school and with parents and children that are taking part.   The children will be initially assessed at the start of the project and again at the end of the project to track distance traveled and to collect data on how successful the project has been.   This project will then feed into a bigger project with partner organisations in Doncaster and North Yorkshire.  The aim for the future would be to create a model of provision that can be adopted by schools to ensure they pick up on children with literacy difficulties at the earliest possible stage, that interventions can be put in place to ensure that children do not continue to fall behind and can maintain their learning in literacy in line with their peers. That all schools will have a trained teacher and or teaching assistant to support with in school and ensure a dyslexia friendly classroom environment.  Covid-19 has hit children hard over the past 12 months and children with special educational needs were the children already falling behind Pre-Covid19 and they are falling further and further behind it is worrying where these children will be on their return to the classroom and the effects it will have on their confidence and mental health.  We feel our project will play a vital part of improving those children's attainment levels in Literacy but will also support them mentally by boosting their confidence and helping to improve their well being in general through learning.
