Mentoring makes a difference!
One to one mentoring provides mentees with the time and space they need to build resilience, confidence and self esteem.
Our one to one mentoring programme provides a child or young person with one on one support from a trained volunteer mentor.
Through recreational activity, our volunteer mentors look to enhance their mentees confidence, self-esteem and resilience levels, so that they can take positive steps forward in their lives.
This is done through weekly sessions that take place within the community so that a positive learning relationship can be formed between the mentor and mentee.
The Island carefully selects, trains and supervises volunteer mentors who make a commitment to meet regularly over the course of six months. The volunteer mentors give their time freely but are provided with a small weekly budget to cover costs, travel and the different activities.
What we are looking for
At The Island, we are constantly looking for people who have the ability to listen, and who feel they can develop a positive rapport with children and young people in an honest, challenging and non-judgemental way.
What difference this will make
“Mentoring is hugely rewarding and has given me an insight into the challenges that children and young people face today. It is a pleasure watching my mentee flourish and she is now confident in setting boundaries to protect her mental wellbeing.
On a personal level, mentoring has provided me with a new set of skills which has enabled me to secure employment in the social care sector. I attribute my career change to The Island and would have no hesitation in recommending their volunteering opportunities to others."
