To expand the number of operating Leg Clubs in the UK, especially in the North of England as currently none operate there.

by The Lindsay Leg Club Foundation in Ipswich, England, United Kingdom

The Lindsay Leg Club Foundation, founded in 2005 works to improve life quality for those with lower limb conditions such as leg ulcers. Through a psychosocial approach not only are their conditions treated physically but their mental well being and their inclusion in society is helped too.

Traditional management of lower leg problems  sees patients attending leg clinics at hospitals and GP practices, or being visited at home by district and other nursing staff. In contrast, the Leg Club model treats individuals (known as members) on a drop-in basis in community settings, often village halls and other community buildings.

The psychosocial Leg Club model is a unique partnership between the nursing team and local community where lower limb management is achieved in a social environment, with others experiencing the similar conditions.

There are currently 44 Leg Clubs operating throughout the UK, with almost 12,000 active members. By the end of 2020 the plan is to have 50 Leg Clubs established.

There is lots of demand to create more Leg Clubs in many more areas of the UK; predominantly in the North of England where at present we don’t have a presence.

The cost to create a new Leg Club in the UK is currently in the region of £12,000. This is to set up the Leg Club and assist with supporting the Clinicians and volunteers for the first year.

The main cost in setting up a Leg Club is purchasing the necessary equipment required to treat the lower limb conditions. Specialist equipment such as Doppler machines and couches, as well as laptops for each Leg Club to be able to record patient data. Equipment for each new Leg Club costs approximately £5,000 and this is what we will use the money be raise through the Aviva Community Fund for.
