Bridport has been a wonderfully welcoming place over many years to refugees fleeing war and persecution, from helping Belgian refugees in the First World War, Vietnamese Boat People and now more recently, families from Sudan, Ukraine and El Salvador.
Bridport Refugee Support Campaign, a registered charity, has been accepted onto to a government scheme to help Afghan families resettle in the UK. Several of these have a member who has worked with the UK in Afghanistan and face threats of reprisal from the Taliban, including academics, journalists, scientists, teachers, interpreters and soldiers who fought alongside our own British soldiers. We owe them an enormous debt of gratitude. As we welcome them to the UK, we have an opportunity to begin repaying this debt, by opening our arms, our hearts and opening doors so they may have a bright new future.
We will be sponsoring two families who we have managed to find accommodation for, and will support them for at least two years to
- become familiar with a new culture
- learn English
- access public services
- navigate the school and benefits systems
- find employment
- integrate into the community
WHAT ARE THE FUNDS WE NEED TO RAISE FOR?
We need to raise money now to help with
- Furnishing two homes (living room furniture, bedroom furniture, kitchen equipment)
- Interpreter charges
- Financial support whilst they await benefit payments
If you would like to welcome, help and support Afghan families coming to the UK, please donate. Your contribution will help these families thrive, as independent and valued members of our community here in Bridport. Thank you! Or as they would say: Tashakur!
