Our organisation

In a deprived inner-city area of Bradford, 2 acres of land, designed to bring the community together, is brimming with wildlife & organic fruit & veg. For the past 16 years, our co-operative has transformed an extremely derelict allotment site into an urban green oasis. We have grown from a group of volunteers in 2008 to a team of 3 local directors working to deliver free programmes of activities for people that need them the most.

Crowdfunder aims

We wish to expand the opportunities we provide to bring people together with shared aims, enjoyment of nature, skill-sharing and a good few cuppas!

We'll be able to run 35 days aimed at empowering adults with learning difficulties, asylum seekers, and those living with mental health struggles to improve well-being and make a difference. We want to show that everyone can enjoy being in nature with others while taking positive action on climate by conserving nature and growing local, natural food.

Action for climate

This will be an inclusive programme to help preserve a vital urban green space, rich in nature, by applying permaculture principles to create a sustainable site for the many groups that use it and for generations to come. The benefits for the climate are direct on a small scale but inspire people on a much wider scale; our green space provides local food, absorbs carbon, mitigates flood risk and encourages biodiversity. The knock-on effect is much wider, increasing the likelihood that people will pursue environmental themes in their own lives and take positive climate action.

Benefits for participants

People who usually struggle to access services will be empowered to enjoy volunteering, meaning the land is more sustainable and people feel more connected. They will take away skills and satisfaction into their own lives.

Current participants, a significant number of whom have learning difficulties, have experienced increased enjoyment of life by getting involved in our positive outdoor activities, as reported by themselves and their families. We wish to broaden these benefits to a wider range of people who would usually struggle to access services.

Benefits for the green space and community

This programme will support our 5 main strands; environmental education, green therapy, wildlife, food growing & volunteering. Our programmes are run for adults with learning difficulties, asylum seekers, families with 0-5’s, LGBTQ+ folk & people with mental health struggles.

The green space will hugely benefit from improved paths and habitats, thriving veg beds, the kids play area kept looking great and a well-tended orchard.
