The life blood of our organisation are our shops in Kings Lynn & Hunstnaton and right now we are facing a trippling of the unit cost of the electricity at our Hunstanton shop! Every penny we spend on anything else, is a penny we don't have to spend on the animals! By installing solar panels this will save an estimated £1500 per annum. To put this in context for us, this will cover the cost of 160 dog vaccines! Without our fantastic shops we just would not exist!
We are the West Norfolk branch of the RSPCA; an independent branch that is fully self-financed. Our territory is very large and covers over half of Norfolk, we have a Rehoming Centre that takes in Cats, Dogs and small mammals in our area, these can be strays or from families that, for whatever reason, can no longer look after them. We have rehomed over 2,000 animals in the last 5 years. The picture above is of Darla how recently gave birth to 7 puppies at the Centre.
We not only take in animals, we are also here to support our local community with advice and support with vet bills.
Right now, we are seeing a massive increase in our vet bill due to the condition the animals are reaching us, terrible ulcerated eyes, ear problems and some very bad skin conditions to name but a few. We expect our vet bill increase by £20,000 in 2023, so we are looking at every way we can reduce our costs. One of those is the cost lighting the rehoming centre. At the rehoming Centre we have 152 Fluorescent tube lights fittings and by swapping these and other lights to LED we can reduce our electricity by an estimated £1,600 per year and our carbon emissions by 1.4 tonnes per annum. To put that into context for us, this is the equivalent to our food bill for 5 months!
