Cander Moss restoration
To protect our peat bog at Cander Moss by removing regenerating birch trees.
Location
- 1 day (7 hours) as a one off
4 positions available
What you will be doing
Work will involve hand pulling small regenerating birch and conifers from the bog surface. Trees that cannot be pulled may be cut using loppers.
What we are looking for
No prior experience required but volunteers should be aware that tasks will involve much use of the back.
What difference this will make
Removing scrub will keep the water table high & help ensure the bog continues to act as a carbon sink.
What to bring
Outdoor gardening type clothing including long sleeved tops and long trousers & hat. Waterproofs & stout walking boots or wellingtons are necessary. If you prefer, please bring your own work gloves. Please dress for the weather and be cold & rain aware; wear layers of clothing, keeping skin covered.
Bring lunch including a flask/extra drinking water as lunch will be eaten on site.
There will be a break for lunch & other breaks as required during the day.
Getting there
Limited parking is available at a nearby farm. Details will be shared with a potential group nearer the time.
Facilities
If people require access to a toilet and a shop, the nearest would be 10 minute drive away to the Tesco in Lesmahagow. We will stop for lunch in the middle of the day to allow people to do this (up to 1 hour between 12-2pm). There are no facilities on site.
Accessibility
Access to the reserve is along a farm field about 10 minutes walk away.
The ground at Cander Moss is uneven, is wet underfoot, and may require a walk over the bog to get to the work site.
Additional Details
Scottish Wildlife Trust will provide supervision including health & safety, all tools and equipment, work gloves. Our staff are first aid trained.
The day will be curtailed if weather makes work unsafe.
