Woodland management at Upper Nethan Gorge
Our trees have now outgrown their tree tubes which now need removing.
Location
- 1 day (7 hours) as a one off
10 positions available
What you will be doing
Several years ago, Scottish Wildlife Trust planted thousands of trees at an extension to our Upper Nethan Gorge reserve near Kirkmuirhill in Lanarkshire.
The task is to remove redundant tree tubes from the trees so we can later remove them from the site.
This will be done by using a craft knife.
What we are looking for
No prior experience needed.
What difference this will make
This will be an essential part of maintaining the new woodland.
What to bring
Outdoor gardening type clothing including long sleeved tops and long trousers & hat. Waterproofs & stout walking boots or wellingtons are necessary. If you prefer, please bring your own work gloves. Please dress for the weather, but be cold & rain aware and wear layers of clothing, keeping skin covered.
There are no toilets on site: the nearest will be in Lesmahagow.
Bring lunch including a flask as lunch will be eaten on site.
There will be a break for lunch and other breaks as required.
Getting there
Shared transport essential as parking restricted. Parking is at a farm and access to the reserve is over farm fields.
Further details can be shared with any groups.
Facilities
There are no toilets on site.
Volunteers would need to bring own lunch including drinks with them.
Please dress for the weather and wear old gardening types clothes that you don't mind getting wet or dirty.
Work will be light but physical involving removing tree tubes from established trees using craft knives. This will involve lots of back work, kneeling, crouching then moving armfuls of tubes to a central location for storage.
Scottish Wildlife Trust staff will provide all health & safety, supervision and tools/equipment.
Volunteer day will last approximately 10am until 3pm, but day may be curtailed if weather deteriorates.
Accessibility
This task is physical, will involve a 20 minute walk to & from the worksite over some undulating terrain, including slopes with no footpaths. Those with health conditions or injuries may wish to contact us prior to booking.
Additional Details
Scottish Wildlife Trust will provide all supervision, tools, work gloves & any necessary safety equipment.
We will also provide all health & safety instruction & monitoring.
If anyone has any medical conditions relevant to the volunteer day they should let us know on the day. The work might require some back power, so those with a bad back would need to take care.
