WHAT'S THE PROBLEM? In our community right now there are families with young children who are vulnerable, already struggling with debt and wondering how they are going to cope once the predicted 50% energy price rise hits in April. We want to relieve their mental stress, ensure the kids are warm and fed and show them a way forward.

HOW? The Rainbow Centre Scarborough works with the homeless and vulnerable in one of the most deprived wards in England. We want to provide a complete intervention to mitigate the worst effects of the energy price rise as follows:

• Our experienced debt advisor will complete a financial assessment and put in place any appropriate debt solution (for example a DRO) to clear existing debt.
•  Budgeting tools and energy saving advice will be offered.
• Cooking lessons with a focus on batch cooking, meal planning and one-pot meals will be provided. Energy efficient slow cookers may also be provided where appropriate.

WHY? These families are already regularly having to choose between heating and eating. We hope that by releasing them from the stress and worry of debt, it will give them a breathing space and an ability to take on board the other skills necessary for a more stable future.

'So the gas bill projection came today. I'm currently in a state of unbelieving shock. How can anyone afford that?'
