Support

Our aim is to provide our community with an energy responsible hub where people will want to spend their days, learn & be creative.

by W.Ave Arts in Saint Leonards-on-sea, East Sussex, United Kingdom

We're still collecting donations

On the 12th January 2023 we'd raised £15,477 with 64 supporters in 56 days. But as every pound matters, we're continuing to collect donations from supporters.

 New stretch target

We have an extended wish list of what we want/need to provide for our community:

  • A flat surface for disabled wheelchair access and strollers - the property was the old tram depot, so the floors are uneven.
  • New disabled WC facilities - currently we have a shed.
  • Plants and decking for our relaxation area - where you can sit and listen to your thoughts or talk with friends.
  • How do you feel when sitting in a large hall that’s bare and has no soul, we have a vision of plants and flowers draping from the ceiling - let’s make this room special and appealing, a place you want to spend time in. Sensory... with soul.
  • A double decker bus is already on site. We want to refurbish and change it into a multi functioning bus for adults and children - let’s create and enjoy experiences at The Compound. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Ce6JXjwIYPL/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Think globally, act locally.

Our team are dedicated to projects and are passionate about our community and surrounding areas.

That is why we want to expand and bring you something new - The Compound.

We need to reach £10,000 before the deadline in order to receive your pledges. If we don’t meet this target, your donations will be refunded. Please join us and donate what you can towards creating the beacon between Bexhill and Hastings - the place to be!

Who we are and what do we want to do?

The vision is to provide a space where you can drop in and work for a day. Upskill, learn about yourself, be inspired and find support around you with like-minded people. We want to help in any way we can towards the next steps of your growth.

Affordable, creative spaces and workshop areas, pop up galleries', a community wall garden, relaxation area and more.

We are a non-profit company and have a small diverse group who have crazy ideas and big ambitions. We aim high to provide something for everyone and we need this help to do it.

  • you will be able to drop into the hub centre - the heart of the building and be involved in workshops, tea and coffee mornings and enjoy the truly affordable workspace.
  • you will be able to meet other members from your community and develop ideas and be inspired in a comforting atmosphere.

We want to demonstrate that amalgamated effort achieves great things, we have consulted with individual members of the public and the feedback has been overwhelming. We know we can build a better future and become healthy and sustainable - these goals are echoed. We have received support for this project from Bexhill Chamber of Commerce, The De La Warr Pavillion and local organisations.

Let’s restore this property into something special!

The detail

The Compound is located at 161 Bexhill Road on the A259. The building used to be a shed factory and has gone into disrepair. Previously, it was the old tram depot. The floor space in the building covers approximately 4850 square ft.

The owner had expressed that he wanted to demolish the property due to the ongoing businesses having difficulty on the site, to make way for 9 flats and has outline permission to do so, but we have convinced him otherwise! We see the historical value of this site and want to incorporate its brick surfaces and wooden beams into the heaven we will call ’The Compound‘ - the only possible future we see - a creative social hub open for and to the public. This is the perfect location, close to all amenities and we have parking.

The focus of this phase

The money raised will be the foundation of our project and go towards Solar panels, batteries and energy efficient lighting and heating - so we can pass on savings to our community. Any money that goes back to the grid will go towards funding further projects and opportunities.

To put it into perspective - the building currently uses approx 53,000 kWh annually. We want to upgrade our lighting and heating to reduce our overall consumption, becoming more energy responsible and introduce solar panels - becoming self sustainable.

Solar panels are going to cost, in the region of  - £25,000

The upgrade in lighting and heating is  - £22,000

The estimated saving from the solar panels annually on CO2 emissions is 3.4ton this is the equivalent to planting 168 trees every year!

and … savings on electricity a year is in the region of £10,000!

We are being as innovative as possible, recycling, repurposing and reusing anything we can find on site.

Benefits

  • The site will be designed to reduce ongoing costs
  • Savings will passed onto the community creating truly affordable spaces
  • Income generated through sending electricity to the grid will be put into future community projects
  • Social impact, reducing social isolation
  • Having a place where you feel safe and welcome, creating inclusivity and equal opportunities
  • Supporting mental health issues
  • Reducing CO2 emissions
  • Cohesion
  • Tackling climate crisis

We have already had donations for new double glazing and had a new staircase put in. We have a small team of volunteers that have worked extremely hard, clearing the site and building creative areas. We are so excited for what’s to come and can’t wait to share it with you.

As this project develops we can provide further opportunities and grow further.
