About Us
Girlguiding Renfrewshire is made up of almost 1700 young people and 500 adult volunteers from around Inverclyde and Renfrewshire. We are part of Girlguiding, the leading charity for girls and young women.
What we do
With Girlguiding girls have the best experiences. Our programmes provide opportunities for girls and young women to have adventures, laugh, learn, make lifelong friends, to find their voice and grow in confidence. During Covid we have adapted: meeting online, running challenges from home and holding virtual sleepovers. Whatever inspires a girl, whatever her passions and interests, Girlguiding offers her the chance to develop her potential, make friends and have fun.
About South Newton
Set in the beautiful Renfrewshire countryside, South Newton is our county’s camp and training centre. For over 50 years girls and adults have made amazing memories at South Newton including first camps, campfire sing-songs, and outdoor adventures. South Newton is a place where many friendships are made that last forever.
Our project
During the pandemic our indoor facilities sadly had to close, and our members have missed out on playing with their friends [Source]. We would love a new outdoor climbing frame for the girls to have even more fun! Our new play frame will enable the girls to enjoy themselves and stay active in the fresh air. There will be swings, towers, a slide, and even an exciting scramble wall! This play equipment will be home to swinging, sliding, and shed loads of laughter!
Who will this help
This new facility will give our Rainbows, Brownies, and Guides a chance to recover from lockdown, even just escaping their homes and schoolwork for an hour or two. Meeting with friends in a safe outdoor environment can help our young members' mental health recovery as we move to a new normal. It is the ideal venue for our young members to relax and recuperate from the stresses of the pandemic. Other groups use South Newton too, including Girls' Brigade and Scouts. Exercising in the outdoors has been scientifically proven to help mental health and wellbeing, building confidence and sparking creativity [Source].
We want to help strengthen our girls resilience to the worries and losses of the pandemic by encouraging them to get together with their friends in a safe and secure way, to have adventures and just to be able to be kids again.
