Supporting adults with long-term mentally illness, who often fall through the gaps in social care and end up living chaotic, unhappy lives.

Why I founded this charity

My parents spent the last 40 years or so of their lives, worrying about who would look after their mentally ill youngest daughter when they were gone - now they are gone, and my sister is now in her mid-60’s, still living alone in chaos, still struggling, still not happy.  It’s heartbreaking to see.

There are hundreds of thousands like her.  With our permanent supported homes, we want to enrich the lives of these vulnerable people with companionship, security, safety, some fun and a sense of purpose - bringing a smile back to their faces. To develop and manage supported homes for the enduring mentally ill – people with long-term experience of schizophrenia, psychosis and other chronic functional disorders. Nothing like this exists at the moment.

These vulnerable individuals struggle to live independently as part of a community and, at the moment, they are often passed around our mental health system living in a variety of temporary social housing before becoming homeless, living lonely chaotic lives and often ending up in trouble with the police. Others become dependent on ageing families who simply cannot cope with their unique needs. The houses, throughout the UK, will be managed on a 24/7 basis to support our residents' diverse needs, including keeping an eye on treatment compliance  and offering activities, kindness and friendship.

"I want to create supported homes for life in which the mentally ill are treated with kindness, compassion, dignity and fairness. This, in turn, will bring relief to their families and friends, and reduce financial pressures on the NHS, the police and prison services, and on local authorities."

We have a Board of committed and enthusiastic Trustees who are responsible for managing the charity's strategic development, fundraising and running the organisation on a day to day basis, in conjunction with a fantastic and growing team of 50+ volunteers.

How the funds would be allocated

We have undertaken extensive research into mental illness and housing - and related issues such as homelessness and street crime - to help us establish the optimum housing models within our communities. So, having done the background work and launched our fundraising campaign, now it is time to start planning and creating the very first Hammersley Home.  We require funding for raising awareness,  training, development, sourcing property opportunities and securing that first home.

The vital first stage of this is to create a Housing Model. This is much more than a description of what the first Hammersley Home might look like. It will be a weighty, detailed plan – an in-depth, step-by-step description of exactly what we are going to do to fulfil our mission. It will include strategic analysis of the current situation across the country – what is working, what is not, current best practice , trends etc.  Plus details of the delivery model.

This will cost  upwards  of £5,000 and will also provide us with an Executive Summary to be added to our Business Plan.

UPDATE: Alongside creating our first Hammersley Home, we will soon be rolling out a new Community Service project.  Initially in the Hampshire area, we will be supporting adults in their own homes who suffer from mental illness, for which we also need to raise crucial funds to employ a Volunteer Co-ordinator.
