Dial A Ride is a Scarborough based, independent community transport charity that has been in existence since 1983.  We have an amazing team of drivers and passenger assistants, the vast majority of whom are volunteers.  We provide safe, accessible, affordable and reliable transport for older people and those of any age with a disability.  Over half of our passengers are aged over 80 (including 15% that aged 90+) and 92% have mobility issues with nearly a third needing to use a wheelchair in order to get around.

Our vital transport service enables our passenger and their carers to get to vital health appointments, to the shops or supermarkets and when current restrictions ease, also to luncheon clubs, support groups, day care, respite care and educational facilities.

Our passengers tell us that without Dial A Ride, they would have real difficulty getting out and retaining their independence.  They are able to maintain friendships, do their own shopping and keep health appointments; some of the positive effects of being able to use Dial A Ride are that they don't feel as lonely, are more confident and feel that someone does care about them. 

We have been able to operate our service safely during  and since lockdown but in order to continue doing so, we have to maintain our additional cleaning and sanisiting measures as well as ensure all our drivers and passenger assistants have high quaility PPE.

One of the additional sanitising measures is the use a an antiviral misting spray which has been tested as effective against the Covid-19 virus.  Each 22 ltr canister costs us £205 and lasts around 6 weeks.  We also use hard surface wipes, face masks, face shields, disposable gloves and currently restrict the number of passengers who can travel on our largest 16 seater minibuses to just 2.
