- Who are we?
Peterborough Town CC is a large, friendly, diverse and successful club running 5 senior weekend teams and junior teams from age 9 to 19 and is run and managed by volunteers. We are proud to be at the heart of our local community representing the diverse backgrounds of Peterborough and it is the "community feel" that we believe makes our club so special to our members and visitors.
The cricket club is ECB Clubmark accredited, providing a sustainable, safe, family friendly welcoming club environment and is part of the City of Peterborough Sports Club, which includes Hockey, Squash, Bowls and Tennis.
We run 10 junior teams including a girls team and 5 senior adult teams. We pride ourselves on having a large and successful junior section where we run the ECB flagship All Stars and Dynamos cricket programmes. Many of our juniors over the years have transitioned to our senior teams a key objective to ensure the long term sustainability of our club.
Why are we crowdfunding?
As a club in recent years we have become much more aware of our environmental responsibilities and the impact our activities on and off the sports pitch have on the environment and climate. Indeed, our objective is to turn these responsibilities into opportunities to improve our carbon footprint and to respond to the challenges of climate change.
We have developed an Environmental and Sustainability Plan which highlights a range of initiatives some of which have been achieved and others which we want to achieve.
To date, we have removed our single use plastics from the clubhouse investing in plastic reusable glasses for drinks from the bar, installed LED lights inside and outside the Clubhouse and placed recycling bins across our ground working in conjunction with our local Waste Removal Supplier. Our emergency lighting both inside and outside the Clubhouse are now LED bulbs and we have expanded the use of light timers on external lighting. We have installed water meters and leak monitoring detection. We urgently built a new soakaway after some of the torrential rains we experienced in 2023 flooded our Clubhouse. We have 4 more soakaways to rebuild as a consequence of continued flooding caused by the age and very poor condition of the soakaways which were originally built in the 1970s and don’t cater for the rains we are now experiencing as a result of climate change.
So, having made an initial start we now wish to progress with our long-term strategy to transition to a low carbon club by reducing our carbon footprint / emissions by developing the following :
• The upgrade to our 1970s built and antiquated showers, replacing old energy inefficient systems with new water saving technology.
• The installation of an irrigation system to our cricket square which will allow automated rather than manual labour intensive watering and which will allow us to water during the summer at night when water will not evaporate and be wasted. We project this level of efficiency will save us very significant volumes of of cubic water.
• We have 4 other soakaways 2 of which are on the cricket outfield. These are in disrepair not fit for purpose given the rains we now experience and not only do they affect the outfield the rain has backed up the roof pipes and the water has damaged the Clubhouse decorations requiring internal repairs as well. Works to rebuild these soakaways to respond to the challenges of climate change are very important.
• We are experiencing flooding of our cricket square during torrential rain despite the cover and protection systems we have. This has meant games have had to be cancelled when otherwise we could have played losing vital revenue. With specialist cricket drainage contractors we can lay drains which will improve the drainage of the cricket square allowing more cricket to be played, participation to keep players active and not lose vital revenue.
• We have a large clubhouse roof and having had initial discussions we want to investigate installing solar panels, rainwater harvesting and given the number of users of our car park and the growth of electric vehicles installation of EV charging points.
