 New stretch target

With the extra funding we will develop our Craftivism & Chat project that aims to build confidence and connection within local Deaf and Disabled people to encourage speaking up and sharing of lived experience to ensure that Deaf and Disabled voices are heard in decisions and conversations that affect our lives.

We are Merton Centre for Independent Living

We are the only user-led pan-disability Deaf and Disabled people’s organisation based in the London Borough of Merton.

This funding would help us to expand our work around increasing independence and inclusion for Deaf and Disabled people in Merton. We would use the funding to support the development of co-produced self-advocacy workshops that would equip Disabled people with the skills to navigate the cost-of-living crisis, increase their financial independence and live more inclusive lives.  The sessions would allow those involved to get connected and take control of their wellbeing.

The sessions will be developed and run by Disabled people and will therefore, directly meet the needs of those in attendance, as well as be accessible. The tools and information shared at each session will be informed by lived experience, which is said to be a powerful tool for creating lasting change. The sessions will provide people with skills to manage/review their income, challenge price increases, apply for grants independently and create connections with local support organisations.

About us

Our organisation works hard to address the marginalisation of Deaf and Disabled people and make a real difference in Merton and the wider community.

We support Deaf and Disabled individuals across the full spectrum of impairment including physical and sensory impairments, mental health, long term health conditions, learning difficulties and neurodiversity.

Our steering group was set up in 2008, we were incorporated as a company by limited guarantee in 2011 and became a registered charity in 2013. We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved alongside local Deaf and Disabled People over the past 14 years. With cuts to funding within the voluntary sector, we are the only organisation within an area of high need providing information and advice specialising in disability.

We are run and controlled by and for Deaf and Disabled people with over 50% of staff and 75% of trustees being Disabled people. We provide a range of free, accessible and supportive services for Deaf and Disabled people in Merton. If you live outside of Merton we can usually put you in touch with an organisation that can help. Find out more about our services. We are also proud to hold the advice quality standard mark

We want a society where Deaf and Disabled people can take control over their lives and achieve full participation.

We work within the social model of disability and an independence charter, co-designed with Disabled people to ensure we can influence key issues affecting our lives in a variety of ways. We provide a holistic service, with all work feeding into our three aims:

To promote the independence and inclusion of Deaf and Disabled people in Merton.

To identify and challenge discrimination faced by Deaf and Disabled people.

To encourage Deaf and Disabled people and supporters to achieve change locally.
