Support Jabulani CIC’s Expansion and Replacement of Adelaide GP Surgery. Stonehouse Health Village: A Healthier, Greener Future for Stonehouse

What is Jabulani?

Jabulani CIC is a thriving, multicultural hub featuring a food court with small start-up units led by BAME entrepreneurs, offering fresh, diverse food to Stonehouse and the wider community. As we’ve grown with this vibrant area, we’ve recognised an urgent need for better health and wellness support.

What is Adelaide Surgery?

Adelaide Surgery is the only GP surgery serving Stonehouse, a neighborhood rich in culture but statistically in the 1% most deprived in the country. Life is shorter and harder than elsewhere – and this shows in bodies and minds struggling to find health. Adelaide Surgery provides GP care to everyone, but also outreach to the neediest, including those experiencing homelessness and struggling with addiction.

What Are We Doing?

In partnership with Adelaide Surgery, we’re transforming an unused site on Union Street into a wellness-centered community space that will serve as the new home for Adelaide Surgery. This modern, expanded building will support community health through a seamless combination of healthcare, food, culture, and sustainability.

How Will We Do It?

With sustainability at its core, this project will bring new life to the community by incorporating repurposed materials and eco-friendly building practices. Check out our shopping list of materials to donate items for the build. The design maximizes social benefit, inviting community members to get involved in creating the space. Our hands-on approach fosters a sense of ownership and investment in the space’s health-centered vision.

Adelaide Surgery’s Move and Health-Focused Approach

Adelaide Surgery will be relocating to this new space, enhancing our capacity to meet the healthcare needs of Stonehouse. The expanded environment will allow for future growth and additional services that can better support the community. Alongside the healthcare space, Jabulani 2.0 will feature areas for nutritious food, exercise, social interaction, and relaxation, creating an inclusive, wellness-focused environment for all. With greenery, communal seating, and spaces for well-being activities, we’re creating a safe, rejuvenating environment that promotes both mental and physical health.

Why Is This Important?

Accessible Health and Wellness for All

In a welcoming and inclusive setting, we aim to make well-being resources accessible to all. The surgery’s new location and Jabulani’s affordable food options will be complemented by community wellness initiatives, making healthy living attainable for everyone in Stonehouse.

Building a Health-Conscious, Sustainable Environment

We’re constructing a health-driven space with a low environmental impact, repurposing materials, and adding urban greenery to improve air quality. By tracking our methods, we’re measuring our carbon savings and setting a model for sustainable, community-focused development.

Encouraging Active and Social Lifestyles

The new space will host well-being activities, yoga sessions, and health workshops, fostering social engagement and active lifestyles. Regular access to this green space will offer community members a sanctuary to relax, connect, and thrive.

A New Model of Care

Current medical models are simply inadequate to respond to the complexity and extent of health issues presented to services in communities like Stonehouse, bound up as they are with underlying trauma, poverty, and lack of agency.

They also pay little heed to the existential planetary crisis that is impacting on the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the physical environment around us.

The result is often chronic ill health, social isolation, over-medicalization, and polypharmacy. Instead, the Village will espouse a trauma-focused, holistic, integrative methodology. It will demonstrate green and sustainable approaches to living and, wherever possible, use people and nature as a source of healing rather than medication.

What We Need

We need your support to bring this vision to life! Contributions will go towards:

  • Coordinating material donations and volunteer efforts for the build,
  • Funding skilled professionals to ensure the site remains safe and secure,
  • Covering rental and preparatory costs for the site, and
  • Bringing in additional expertise as needed.

Why Should You Help?

The success of Jabulani 1.0 demonstrated that intentional community spaces can drive meaningful social impact. Now, Jabulani 2.0 is poised to set a new standard in health-conscious, eco-friendly design that meets both the physical and mental wellness needs of Stonehouse. Join us on this journey toward a healthier, more sustainable community—your support can be the catalyst for real change. Help us build a future where community health, culture, and sustainability intersect!
