What we do
Our trustees play a vital role in making sure that St Sampson’s Centre achieves its core purpose. Our aim is to provide a social centre for older people in York. The Centre provides social opportunities and activities such as games, dancing, music and crafts. We also work with partners in York, such as AGE UK and OCAY, to bring advice and information services to our customers. We have a monthly programme which reflects the request of our customers and changes regularly. We also provide a welcoming cafe with low cost, high quality food. Customers can stay as long as they want to and come as often as they want to. We are a warm place for older people to socialise.
Over 100 people come each day to use the centre. The centre has 30 volunteers who run the cafe, preparing food each day and serving behind the counter or operating the till. Volunteers staff our reception area, lead activities and help with our lovely garden area. Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and we work with them to ensure that they enjoy their volunteering experience with us.
The Charity has 4 paid staff and is managed by a board of trustees.
Our Trustees oversee the overall management and administration of the charity. They also ensure that St Sampson’s has a clear strategy and that our work and goals are in line with our vision. Just as importantly, they support and challenge the management team to enable St Sampson‘s to grow and thrive, and through this to achieve our mission.
What we need
We are looking for people willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and commitment to the role of Trustee and who will broaden the diversity of thinking on our board. We particularly want marketing skills as our audit of existing skills shows that we are lacking in this area.
We have a development plan that identifies the need to market the Centre and our work but we need help in taking this forward. Can you help?
