Nether Lochaber Community Association

RCN SC047546, Fort William

We are a local, voluntary association which aims to make Nether Lochaber a better place to live, work and visit. Our membership is made up of people living in the area who want to get involved in improving their community.

Nether Lochaber Community Association

Nether Lochaber comprises a number of small villages and crofting townships on the eastern side of Loch Linhe on the west coast of Scotland, stretching from the Ballachulish Bridge over the mouth of Loch Leven to just south of Fort William.

The association is a registered charity comprising a small board of volunteer trustees plus members who are mostly from the local area. We are working to improve the local facilities and services for the people who live here and for those who visit. We do this by:

  • creating new facilities, and improving existing ones, to support the provision of additional services;
  • organising or supporting community social events;
  • taking care of our historic and natural surroundings.

Recent projects

Our recent projects have included:

  • the creation of a public picnic area by the side Loch Linhe ( our main picture above shows the opening ceremony );
  • establishing a small orchard near the local primary school;
  • the commissioning of a mosaic depicting the local area that was designed by a local artist and then created by her and children from the local school -
    this was placed by the side of national cycleway 78 and supported by a grant from Sustrans;
  • taking on ownership of the local Creag Mhor cemetery so we can repair (rebuild!) its dry stone walls and provide for its long term upkeep

  • the Cuilcheanna cross ( close to the main road through Onich )
  • public benches, plantings and floral displays provided by this association
  • the footpath between the ferry slipway and Bishops Bay on the north side of Loch Leven
  • the picnic site and cemetery mentioned above

Community Hub project

Looking ahead, we are working on the creation of a Community Hub, to be located in a converted 18th century barn in the village of Inchree  ( a few minutes walk from the famous water falls ). This is a longer term project where the current plan is for the hub to include a cafe plus separate rooms that can be used individually or in combination for a range of services from financial help sessions to arts and crafts activities, etc.

More details on this project are available here .

How you can help us

With your support we can:

  • purchase tools, plants, and other necesseties so we can continue to look after our local facilities and environment
  • put on events such as a New Year Ceilidh with transport provided for those who otherwise may not be able to come
  • assist individuals and small groups wanting to help with specific local issues
  • take advantage of future opportunities, e.g. we have started discussing a new environmental project which could involve children from the local school

At the moment we also have a separate appeal running to help cover the costs involved in adopting Creag Mhor cemetery to protect its future.

Finally, if you live in the area then please consider joining us; take a look at our facebook page to see what is going on - maybe come along to one of our action days to say hello and get some exercise !

Alternatively you can contact us for more details at [email protected]
