Providing additional Outdoor Learning space for young people in Old Catton

I think it’s so hard for young people to get out and experience the outdoors – it can be quite an intimidating place – lots of people don’t even know how to get out there, where to go or what to do.

As a society, we tend to get caught up with the rules of things ‘you can do this, but you can’t do that' or 'here, but not there’ so much so that people become put off by exploring and I think that’s a shame – our kids lose out on so much magic and joys of the outdoors.

We want to change that - we want to open some of those doors, to share and teach skills to bring the young people in our community closer to nature.

Nature and the outdoors are languages that can be learned. Once you can identify a beech tree, tie a clove hitch, camped out in a tent or cooked a simple meal over a fire that you’ve built yourself, you’ll never forget it.

Our Project

We, 44th Norwich (Old Catton) Scout Group, want to re-purpose the relatively small amount of land around our HQ to be a more functional gateway to the outdoors.

We don’t have a lot of space so we want to maximise what we have, to provide an outdoor learning zone where we can introduce and teach new skills. We also want to purchase additional equipment to allow a greater range of activities.

Our aim is to clear, develop & extend the outdoor storage area so we can re-purpose the space for bushcraft, forestry schooling, outdoor cooking and pioneering.

The donations we are asking for are part of what we need to make our ambition happen. Any donation you make will be used to enhance our fundraising directly for our ongoing project.
Our project goals you’ll be helping with are:

  • Ground maintenance to open up a more usable space.
  • Prepare proposal to acquire additional grounds.
  • Relocate the trailer store.
  • Provide axe chopping blocks .
  • Purchase a stainless steel outdoor food preparation table.
  • Create a wood store which will also be used for our outdoors pioneering poles.
  • Additional outdoors learning equipment for the group.

Who will benefit
We currently have approx. 100 young persons aged 6 to 14 yrs in our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Groups alongside supporting leaders. We have members from various local communities; Old Catton, Sprowston, Spixworth & Norwich. We are a non-profit organisation and a registered charity (no. 1022330). All adult leaders, helpers and supporters are volunteers.

We also share some of our facilities with Lodge Lane Infant School. Several of the pupils are part of our two Beavers groups.

Why this is important

There is growing evidence that supports the benefits of outdoor learning for children ; health, wellbeing, growth and learning at a critical age in their development. Creating a stronger connection to nature. Our activities also encourage team working and social skills.

We want to facilitate, and ensure, we give outdoor learning opportunities to our community. Inspiring them to get outdoors, provide new experiences and teach skills that will last a lifetime.
