OUR STORY
Planet Earth Games, the world's first environmental-themed sports event, was launched in 2019. Planet Earth Games champions our belief in the symbiotic relationship between the health of the planet and the health of people. After all, how can we best look after our health and wellbeing if we don't protect the environments we inhabit?
Planet Earth Games started as a regional in-person event in Devon, but, after being taken online due to the pandemic, is international. Since going digital, Planet Earth Games has developed from two month-long events a year into a season stretching from January-October, with every month having a unique environmental theme and including four challenges. These challenges are set by our partners; organisations across the charitable, sporting and environmental sectors, operating locally, nationally and/or internationally. Across the season, different partners set an accessible and inclusive challenge for young people, adults and families which require them to engage with the environment, get active and partake in climate conscious behaviours. Example challenges include plogging (litter picking and jogging), connecting with nature (e.g. wild swimming and tree hugging) and upcycling.
Through the month-long events we delivered during the pandemic, we reached over 1.5 million people over social media and engaged over 2000 people in the challenges. The impact of these events on participants was significant; with 87% learning something new about environmental sustainability, 95% intending to change their behaviour to be more environmentally friendly and 61% increasing their physically activity rates.
We are incredibly proud of the numbers we have engaged and the impact we have been able to achieve through Planet Earth Games – but we know we have the potential to do so much more. With the Planet Earth Games platform, our reach and impact could be even more expansive, both nationally and internationally, inspiring more communities, schools and workplaces to lead active and sustainable lifestyles.
