The current cost-of-living challenges are impacting not only the most vulnerable families but are also pushing working families into in-work poverty, stretching household budgets to the limit.  The continual stress of making ends meet, and the worry of continued and substantial energy price increases, also have an emotional toll on people’s mental health.

Our project aims to offer a two-pronged approach:

Practical support/training
1] Financial training: To help families to understand their financial situation, establish spending priorities, create long-term goals, and build a financial plan, including savings.

2] Offer a coaching service to help families gain a comprehensive and lasting financial management plan, enabling them to maximize their disposable income.

This will be led by finance professionals.  We aim to address their immediate needs, but also to give them a long-term route away from poverty.

Emotional support/training
1] Recognizing the signs of stress and how to manage it, including regular exercise, relaxation, sleep, boosting self-esteem, eating healthily, and gratitude.

2] Talking to someone - how sharing concerns helps to reduce stress, and how gaining an understanding of their financial problems reduces the need to struggle alone.

3] Small peer group support with professional input.

4] Identifying how families can have fun and days out for free or within their budget.

This project will benefit low-income Orthodox Jewish families and those who are struggling with their finances.  The difference it will make is to reassure families that they have the support they need, that they are not alone, and that, with the right support and adjustments to their finances, they can face the current challenges with reduced stress.
