As a Debt Centre we have seen people in desperate circumstances flourish with the support we offer. We want to be able to reach more people in debt and poverty in Sale so we are asking for your help with the running costs to continue the amazing work of Sale Debt Centre and release people trapped by unmanageable debt.

Our Story

In 2018 a group of 8 churches in Sale got together to try to do something about local debt poverty. We launched Sale Debt Centre in May 2019 as part of the Christians Against Poverty (CAP) network of debt help centres. Our vision: to see lives transformed, thriving churches and an end to UK poverty.

In partnership with CAP we offer a free debt counselling service to anyone wanting to escape problem debt. We employ a part time Debt Centre Manager, Debbie Walters, who provides debt counselling and with volunteer Befrienders offers practical, emotional and social support to clients.

The Issue

We help people weighed down by debt to become debt free. People may be stuck in long term unemployment or navigating life on a low income or struggling with everyday challenges. These problems can cause people to become trapped in poverty and debt. Debt devastates lives leaving people suicidal, isolated, depressed and alone.

Our Service

Following a free phone call to CAP on 0800 328 0006, Debbie and a Befriender will visit a client three times to establish a relationship, collect the paperwork and explain the options and plan from CAP’s FCA regulated experts. While Debbie supports the client to keep to budget and plan, the Befriender offers support for example accompany clients to social events to help build confidence and reduce isolation.

After the initial visit the immediate impact to the client is relief. Handing over everything releases pressure, and anxiety about debt. As debt is reduced, emotional well being improves leading to better physical and emotional health. More income leads to choices and opportunities.

This process works and is really important because it provides an opportunity not only to support a client through the process of becoming debt free but to build a relationship, offering support specific to their needs. We are not just fixing a debt problem but supporting the whole person.

In partnership with other CAP centres we run CAP Money, a budgeting course which gives people a simple system for managing money. This education is invaluable and helps to prevent further debt.

Feedback from a client

“We searched far and wide for help with my debt but nowhere would or could help me apart from CAP who said yes regardless of the outcome and I cannot thank you all enough for not only helping me understand how it works, taking the time to explain every detail and always having patience and kindness when I needed it most.”

This feedback inspires us to keep going and support more people to become debt free especially during this challenging time of increasing costs in living where people are having to choose between food or keeping warm. This is leaving more people in poverty and debt.  We know that mental health issues are a major factor for many of our clients and this will make them more vulnerable to challenges in the months to come.  We can help!  Can you help us -  to transform lives in Sale.
