What you will be doing
Ride Management for Wood Ants
'Rides' are the track like clearings that you see in woodlands, often between trees, which help with access. However they are also great habitats for wood ants who like a fairly sunny, clear glade or ride. Therefore this session is likely to include work to ensure that these areas are clear from too much scrub or invasive species so that sunlight can reach the forest floor.
About Greno Woods Nature Reserve
Greno Woods is an ancient woodland rich in wildlife and one of our largest reserves, covering 169 hectares. As well as varierty of conifer and broad leaf trees, it is also an important natural flood management role, containing a network of ponds, ditches ready to store water and slow the flow; reducing the flooding impact in the local area while also creating habitat for freshwater invertebrates and amphibians such as common frog and smooth newt.
You'll also see, or hear, a range of birds such as woodpecker, tree creeper and woodcock; and find evidence of mammals such as bats, badgers and roe deer.

What we are looking for
No specific skills required. The ground is uneven in many places and some level of physical fitness would be good however we will have regular biscuit breaks and can adapt the activity to all levels.
The most important thing is that you're willing to give it a go while being outside to enjoy the fresh air. 🌞
What difference this will make
Due to habitat destruction, particularly deforestation and developments, wood ants can only be found in a handful of sites across Sheffield and Rotherham; luckily Greno Woods has become a safe haven for them. With your support we can keep it that way, protecting a species that is a cornerstone of woodland ecology.
What to bring
Please bring: Lunch, water, appropriate clothes and footwear for the weather and activities.
Please wear boots if possible.
