Blacka Moor: Wild Work Day
Invasive species control (rhododendron) to help our native wildlife.
Location
- Wed 6 Nov 2024, 9:50am-3:00pm
Sorry, opportunity full
What you will be doing
Rhododendron was introduced to the UK by the Victorians in the 18th Century as an ornamental plant. It became especially popular on large country estates, which is why you might regularly see it while out on a walk. However like many ornamental species, it has few to no predators in the UK and can grow large and dense, shading our native species and dominating habitats; creating a mono-culture which is poor habitat for local wildlife.
The best way to deal with this is to cut down to stump level.
About Blacka Moor Nature Reserve
Blacka Moor is our largest and most spectacular of our nature reserves. Based at the edge of the Peak District, it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and has views across to both Sheffield and the Peak District Moors.
It has a mosaic of habitats that is home to exciting wildlife such as skylarks, viviparous lizards, bog asphodel and green hairstreak butterfly. It is also well known for its recreational use by local residents and beyond; encouraging the general public to connect with nature and improve mental and physical health.
Autumn means you should be able to spot a range of fungi as well as see the beautiful autumn colours.
What we are looking for
No specific skills required. Some level of physical fitness would be good however we will have regular biscuit breaks and can adapt the activity to all levels.
The most important thing is that you're willing to give it a go while being outside to enjoy the fresh air. 🌞
What difference this will make
Rhododendron threatens a variety of UK habitat and can grow up to 8 metres tall, it easily out-competes our native plants and has also been known to pass disease onto other plants and trees. You'll be protecting habitat for our native species and creating a mosaic of important habitat.
This activity is particularly satisfying to be able to see the difference you've made before and after the day!
What to bring
Please bring: Lunch, water, appropriate clothes and footwear for the weather and activities.
For this activity we recommend a long sleeved top and trousers.
