Vanclaron was founded to tackle inequality within vulnerable, marginalised and hard-to-reach communities, including Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME), refugees, Asylum seekers and those experiencing socio-economic deprivation. We take a culturally sensitive approach to empowering this diverse group of service users to take control of their life and reach their potential. Our staff members and volunteers are almost all from BAME communities, including predominantly Black individuals from Africa and a staff member of Jewish ethnic origin and heritage. Vanclaron staff will be running in the Robinhood half -marathon to raise money to support refugee and asylum seekers enrolment in college.
Why support our project:
49% of Asylum migrants are unemployed compared to 27% of other migrants and UK-born citizens. This discrepancy remains even 25 years post-migration. We wish to enrol our service-users in vocational courses at Nottingham College and support them financially, practically and emotionally throughout. Refugees could choose a course and would be enrolled using the funds obtained from this grant application. Vanclaron staff will support in the acquisition of these tools however is needed but expect this to minimally include support with enrolment, accessing educational support services, provision of translators, travel planning/financing and acquiring stationery/laptops. Funds will also provide stationery, transport and pay Vanclaron staff to support refugees in the acquisition of their qualifications. This will provide them with the opportunity to gain UK-recognised qualifications which will be a stepping stone to financial independence.
