If we are successful in exceeding our original target we would extend the project, potentially doubling the number of walks and meaning we could extend the area the walks cover, taking in more local communities and helping more people to get out and explore their local area.
The Steel Valley Project has 2 Environmental Project Officers who lead environmental volunteer days every week enabling local people to access training, build experience, meet new people, gain new skills, confidence and make a difference to their local area.
We are looking for funding to extend our current volunteer days to provide a series of small, local guided walks for those people within the community who want to get involved and learn more about their local area but can't for a variety of reasons be it time constraints, health or mobility issues or social isolation. The walks will be aimed at encouraging local people to come and explore their local area, see what's been happening, break down the barriers around feelings of safety and isolation and meet new people.
The Covid lockdowns have had a massive effect on peoples health both physically and mentally. We hope these walks will provide improvements to both these areas whilst building on the new found love of the local community formed during the 'daily exercise' from the recent lockdowns.
The walks will be short and local yet interesting, focussing on the local woodlands and countryside, explaining the history and features of the places we visit and taking in the fantastic views of the Upper Don valley whilst being accessible to everyone from families to those with mobility issues.
