To provide more and better support services to families with any cancer diagnosis, in one safe, secure, friendly and welcoming new location.

New stretch target

We have considered a phased approach to essential refurbishment requirements.  We will be able to complete the whole project fully and be operational if we achieve the stretch target budget.

A further stretch would include all of the equipment, tools etc to support the activities envisaged for families in the new location.

Team Solan’s project goal is to improve and expand our cancer support services, helping families cope with any kind of cancer diagnosis ( Warriors) , in a single, safe, secure, friendly and welcoming location.

All of our many Support Activities for families are currently scattered around Spennymoor, our base.  These include sessions on pilates, yoga, coffee mornings, various therapy treatments, hair treatments and hair replacement services ( wigs etc),  social events ( to combat isolation and encourage engagement), support group meetings, fund raising events.

Providing support services in many venues is difficult to manage, limits activities, results in an inferior service and critically is much more difficult for attendee families and carers with cancer. Being able to provide existing, enhanced and new services in a dedicated, familiar location, knowing attendees would be welcomed by familiar faces, be secure, be safe and with privacy where needed, will make a huge difference to participation and to families.  We would be able to help and support many more in need, combat isolation, and encourage social interaction.  New services envisaged include crafting, art club, kitchen training and cooking lessons, school holiday activities for children / families, support groups for different cancers, more volunteering / back to work opportunities, more focussed support groups, and even just the chance for a break for a couple of hours with friends.

To date in 2019 Team Solan have helped 116 new families with a cancer diagnosis.

Current photos of the building we propose to transform are below, and you can see why we need help.  Chris Rushworth , Durham County Cricket Club, called to see the "thermometer" tracking funding progress and to help Mark clear rubble....

And still lots to do.....

What needs doing, in detail:

Who are Team Solan:

We began supporting families impacted by cancer in 2015, and registered as a charity in 2017,  to directly help individuals and families touched by cancer. The Charity is all about kindness, caring, help and support to families, individuals and loved ones along their cancer journey. Since 2015, we’ve met lots of people living with and affected by cancer, and learned that whilst a cancer diagnosis is life-changing, it is not always life-defining,  and with emotional  and practical support, many people affected ( “Warriors” we call them ) can move on as parents, grandparents, friends, colleagues, and also be a great support group to other “Warriors”.

We recognise that everyone’s practical needs can be different.  Based in Spennymoor, operating across County Durham and Darlington, we provide practical, initially face to face help, practical and emotional support and advice to those in need.  This ranges from a taxi to get to hospital, to a service need or equipment in the home, to emotional support.  We are growing and have plans to expand well-established support groups that meet regularly. We help fund-raise to address specific family needs. With minimal red tape, a strong caring ethos, flexibility and focus, we start with the view that we can and will help, then quickly work out how. Help can be just be providing emotional support and reassurance that people can and do beat their cancer diagnosis.

As an organisation we pride ourselves on being able to respond quickly to those in most need, with the flexibility of a small, nimble team having a clear focus and an over-riding passion to quickly help and support in whatever way possible.  We have helped 109 new families with a cancer diagnosis in 2019. We received referrals from Macmillan (32 referrals to date in 2019) and from other local Hospices.

As Team Members our core values are always acting in a safe, secure & compliant way, being professional, courteous and acting as a team, focussed on customers and continuously improving our activities and plans.

How is the local business community responding around Spennymoor responding to the Project?

Mark Solan put a “shout out” to local businesses, on Facebook,  in parallel with developing our  Aviva Crowdfunder Project.  Local Businesses have responded quickly and generously with offers of project help and support.  We are receiving help from our local Business Network Group too.  To date we have had offers of help ( free or discounted labour or materials/equipment or both) amounting to funding pledges of  over £10,700 and rising towards our project target and stretch target.

Local Businesses involved so far include: DP Plumbing, Paul Moses Joinery, Spray Clad Bespoke Joinery, Fisher Electrical Systems, Dulux Paint, Thorn Lighting, AIO Electrical Services, Arrow Shutters, Franks Flooring, Stephen Nicholson Painting and Decorating, Cre8ive Designs, Howdens Kitchens, Wellsbury Kitchens, Living Rooms, Wardman Brown, Neil Grayson (Durham Logburners), Bishop Middleham Plant Recycle.  Help is being offered in the following areas: new boiler, pipework and radiators; all joinery work; fire detection systems, health & safety inspections; project management; planning applications and design; paint; LED lighting; all electrical work; shutters for the building; all flooring; all painting and decorating; design and supply of fundraising panels; design, supply and fitting of a training kitchen, skips.

This is a great start to our “crowdfunding” and reflects the local support for this project and the difference that the Team Solan charity can make to families with a cancer diagnosis.
