by Denvir Jardine in Dungannon, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

 New stretch target

There are large numbers of young people who enjoy some of our facilities and training, however, due to financial restrictions, we cannot offer everyone access to all our programmes.

With Additional donations from our supporters, we will be be able to extend our personal finance and budgeting support to an increased number of beneficiaries from across the Dungannon area

About Dungannon Boxing Club

We have been providing training, coaching and guidance to young people since 1987.

Not only do we advocate for engagement in the sport of boxing, but we are dedicated to developing our young people to become responsible, respectful and worthwhile, independent members of our community.

Yes, we encourage boxers to be competitive, but we also respect an individual's own requirements and recognise that not all can be the next Tyson Fury.

We believe in advancing mental health alongside the benefits of physical development and maintaining a healthy and balanced diet, to remain fit for life.

Our approach is holistic, in that boxing and training are paramount, but allied to support from dedicated volunteers and coaches, we develop core life skills such as respect for self and others, the importance of good citizenship, community engagement, being the best possible person you can be, discipline, care and empathy for others, resilience and so forth.

We recognise that our young people make a positive choice to engage with our club, so we endeavour to make all engagements fun, focus on the social element and be part of a strong wider team.

Supporting Young People

We offer support to our boxers in relation to many of the challenges and issues facing young people, such as anti-social behaviour, smoking, alcohol abuse, illegal drug use, mental health, maintaining a healthy diet, avoiding 'risky' behaviours and using time and capacity to become productive members of our community and wider society.

With support from Aviva, we will focus on delivering specialist personal finance advice and focus on the value of money and how they earn and use it wisely.

Let's talk about Money

We will focus on a range of financially-based topics such as opening a bank account, savings, mortgages, managing personal budgets, the danger of debt, planning for larger future financial decisions such as buying a car, student finances, buying their own home and even pensions for a comfortable retirement.

Allied to this, we think it is also important beneficiaries will have a strong understanding of work and their earnings. Few will be lucky to make it to professional status, but all must consider their future earning potential and understand their obligations. Using examples from the sporting world, we will look at potential career paths such as personal trainers, employees in gyms, sports administrators etc.

Each will be offered a better understanding of how their income from future employment will be subject to external obligations such as HMRC requirements, National Insurance contributions, individual and employer pension payments etc.

We want to deliver a wider message to young people to avoid certain paths to 'easy  money' and how to avoid many unwise choices i
