About The Pitt
Established in 2015, The Pitt provided space, support and skills development for new food businesses and performing artists. Located on Pitt Street in Leith, it was an immediate hit with locals, establishing a loyal customer base and becoming a hub for the community. Traders such as Pizza Geeks begun their businesses there and have since gone on to major success, attributing that success to the opportunity The Pitt provided. Due to planned redevelopment, The Pitt closed its doors in October 2022.
Re-established, relocated and reimagined
In 2023, The Pitt re-established itself as a Not-for-Profit Community Interest Company and is owned and operated by the Granton Project. Now based at West Shore Road on the Granton Promenade and part of the North Edinburgh regeneration project, The Pitt, Granton will again provide space, support and skills development for local individuals, entrepreneurs and businesses to set-up and grow.
Occupying a significantly larger area at 15,000 square feet, The Pitt’s bold vision is for a new social, cultural and grassroots space where ideas can be trialled, tested and brought to life in a supportive, low-barrier, community environment. A place for locals to meet, visitors to drop-in, dog walkers to stop by. Where conversation and collaboration is encouraged, and where ideas are supported to fruition and beyond.
The Big Plans
The Pitt, Granton will have year-round indoor market, a permanent outdoor street food market, a coffee shop, a bar and a 700 capacity event space hosting a regular programme of events. The Pitt, Granton will be an entrepreneurial hub as well as an open, safe, collaborative space for the whole community, providing both economic and social benefits locally.
How will your donation help?
Money raised here will help us create fully equipped enterprise units for use by street food traders, artists, and retail entrepreneurs to kick-start their businesses or ideas, and will enable the Pitt to reduce financial barriers and risk, as well as supporting the creation of free learning and development resources, including mentorships. Our project aims to support grassroots initiatives and start-ups with direct financial support, while also creating a supportive, accessible space to allow local enterprise to flourish and build wealth in the community.
Matched funding from Aviva Community Fund
Every individual donation made up to £250 will be matched 1:1 by the Aviva Community Fund, with up to £25,000 committed to the project by them.
Why does this matter?
We'll let Ryan McGlone, Youth Work Team Leader from Granton Youth tell you: “our young people are so excited that The Pitt is coming to Granton, we need a bigger space so can’t wait for it to be open and available for us to use. It’s been really exciting to be involved early on with the plans, working with the team driving the project forward, and we’re especially excited about the mural we’ve been codesigning for the indoor market wall. The Pitt is going to be such a positive addition to the local community and for us at Granton Youth."
We've already raised over £500,000 from First Port and Foundation Scotland, so this is the final piece of the puzzle to help us realise the ambitions for The Pitt Granton and the North Edinburgh community.
