 New stretch target

With extra funding we can transform new areas around The Vale into 'pocket parks', with new seating, and living walls; install and paint a storage unit for our equipment; run twice a year community celebration days.

Who we are

Friends of The Vale CIO is a small charity which enables Tameside residents to develop new skills, friendships and opportunities through creative, ecological and  gardening activities. We work in and around The Vale, Micklehurst Road, Mossley.

"Our space gardening project has provided me with a sense of purpose...it has enabled me to grow and connect with others." Participant, 2024.

Our project idea

We want to develop our impact over the next twelve months via an exciting range of activities which support bio-diversity, increase knowledge of permaculture techniques, and awareness of sustainable energy use. Key strands include:

  • For Adults: Weekly creative skills workshops for local adults (focus on people who may be isolated). Topics will include: permaculture techniques in creating a community garden; nurturing bio-diversity at a local level; renewable energies (exploring micro-hydro and PV technologies being developed at The Vale).
  • For Children and Families: Fortnightly outdoor gardening programme, for families, connecting with nature, insects, and permaculture principles.
  • For Everyone: Volunteering opportunities for participants who want to take on more of a co- leadership roles.

Project Aims and Impact:

50 adults will gain new knowledge around supporting bio-diversity in their local town, and of sustainable energy usage, and generation.

50 children and parents will gain knowledge of local eco-systems and how to support pollinators.

One new community garden developed with permaculture principles, creating habitats for insects and birds on former industrial land.

500 visitors to our final celebration event will gain knowledge of the risks to local eco-system and the positive steps we can all take to address these.

What we need the funding for

Funding will contribute to the costs of materials (e.g. for planters, trellis, beds);  plants for the outdoor areas; gardening tools; creative facilitators to lead specific skills sessions; freelance project manager.

Our vision

With the support of our local community we can continue to transform the spaces around a former mill on an industrial estate into a beautiful community garden which can be used by local people as a space to relax and enjoy the natural environment. In the process, we’ll support biodiversity and help residents gain knowledge of the practical actions they can take to protect and restore the our environment.

Thank you for supporting our project.
