What you will be doing

Activities may include planting wildflower meadows, coppicing trees and shrubs, removing invasive plant species, restoring wildlife hides, even donning waders and working from within our ponds and reed beds. WWT corporate volunteers contribute to real wetland reserve conservation activities across our Wetland Centres, which comprise our annual reserve management plans. Please note that conservation activities may be subject to change due to the weather, environmental considerations and reserve priorities.

What we are looking for

We welcome all skill and experience levels. Please let us know about any accessibility requirements in your team in advance, as most tasks on our reserves require physical labour and we will need to plan ahead and make adjustment. Please see our accessibility information for WWT London here: https://www.wwt.org.uk/wetland-centres/london/plan-your-visit/accessibility/

Our corporate volunteering days will:

  • Strengthen your team, boost their morale and create a real sense of achievement
  •  Improve your team’s health and well-being, ensuring they return to work feeling re-energised and de-stressed
  • Give your team a greater understanding of environmental issues and wetland conservation
  • Help meet your corporate social responsibility objectives

What difference this will make

You’ll be helping with real wetland conservation work, creating, enhancing and restoring wetlands for wildlife and people.

You can support WWT and join us at our London Wetland Centre in Barnes for a day volunteering outdoors, getting stuck into real wetland conservation work helping us to unlock the power of wetlands – and help nature burst back to life. By signing up for this volunteering opportunity today, you can get closer to nature and take action for wetlands.

In November at WWT London, Winter is a brilliant time to visit the reserve. London Wetland Centre has become one of the best places to spot bitterns, one of the UK’s rarest breeding birds. In addition, nationally significant numbers of gadwall, shoveler, wigeon and teal spend the season with us, too.

Your conservation task will be part of essential reserve management that is done on an annual basis in order to maintain and enhance the biodiversity of the site. These activities have a real impact on our wetland reserves and are proven to enhance the health and wellbeing of participants.

We look forward to welcoming you to WWT London for a day of meaningful volunteering, working with one of the world’s leading conservation charities to make a real difference.

What to bring

What to Bring

  • Water (bottled water can also be purchased from our restaurant)
  • A packed lunch if you do not plan to have lunch in our café
  • Any necessary medication (e.g. EpiPens, inhalers, allergy tablets)
  • A rucksack which can be carried on your person, as we do not have storage or lockers for changes of clothes; you are also welcome to leave all personal belongings locked in the room provided for the day so we ask that you do not bring any valuables since we cannot accept liability for the loss of any personal belongings

What to Wear

  • Outdoor clothes suitable for the weather and temperature
  • Outdoor footwear that you don’t mind getting wet, muddy or paint splattered (walking boots, wellies or old trainers are all suitable unless otherwise advised)
  • Waterproofs if it’s due to rain (we do not carry spare wet weather clothing)
  • Sun protection, where appropriate
  • Thick socks, as you may be asked to change into protective footwear, depending on the conservation activity – we recommend thick socks to prevent blisters

Getting there

The WWT London Wetland Centre is located on Queen Elizabeth Walk in Barnes, South West London, SW13 9WT. There are ample car parking facilities and public transport connections available. To plan your journey please check our website HERE for more details on public transport and directions. Note there is currently travel disruption due to the closure of Hammersmith Bridge – please check your journey using https://tfl.gov.uk/plan-a-journey/ before your visit.

If you intend to drive, please be aware that the car park is covered by an ANPR system. Parking is free for volunteers but you must remember to enter your vehicle registration on one of the pads in the admissions area to avoid a Parking Charge Notice.

Facilities

Subject to any special arrangements, you can have lunch and other refreshments in our Kingfisher Kitchen. Lunch is served in the café between 11.30 and 15.00 (weekdays).  Tea, coffee etc. is available all day as either drink in or take away. Last orders at 4.00pm.

If not paying individually, the most practical way to handle this is to establish a tab and for the team leader to settle the bill at the end of the day (please note we do not accept American Express).

In order to help our catering team with lunch arrangements you will be sent an advance copy of the current menu in our Kingfisher Kitchen. If you intend to eat in the café, please decide your choice of main menu and provide that to our team upon your arrival.

Please let us know if any team members have any specific dietary requirements.

Please note that the café seating is reserved for those purchasing refreshments on the day. If you are bringing a packed lunch we ask that you use the various picnic areas located around the reserve.

Please remember to wash your hands thoroughly before eating and drinking.

Accessibility

All our Wetland Centres exist to fulfil founder Peter Scott’s vision of connecting people with nature, so we make it a principle that our wetlands and wildlife are accessible to everyone.

Please let us know about any accessibility requirements in your team in advance, as most tasks on our reserves require physical labour and we will need to plan ahead and make adjustment.

You can find out more details about accessibility at London, including facilities here: https://www.wwt.org.uk/wetland-centres/london/plan-your-visit/accessibility/
