To buy an Ecargo bike and help more rough sleepers with living aid in Manchester

by Vincent O'Neal in Manchester, England, United Kingdom

Homelessness has existed since the beginning of time and there have been many fine organisations down the ages who have tried to reduce the problem.

At GSA we are doing our part with others as members of The Manchester Homeless Partnership and Street Network Link to bring relief for People Sleeping Rough throughout Greater Manchester.

We believe we are different to most charities that help people suffering extreme hardship. Most Charities work from static points to offer help but at GSA we go to where people live on our city streets and other locations that are wide, varied and often unsafe.

Using our unique daily approach we help our service users by building up friendships with them over time in an effort for them to gain control of their lives.

It means we can provide them with daily basic living essentials like food, drink, bedding, sleeping bags, tents and most of all a friendly chat to see how they're doing.

With help from the statutory services we help them reach out to family and friends to regain a local connection to get them back on their feet again.

Our daily mobile van operation seeks people who live in some of the most hazardous places like woodland, riversides, railways and disused buildings.

Reaching over 37 people each week with living relief, GSA are launching an E- Bike service where we anticipate that figure to rise up to 50 as we will be able to go where motor vehicles have no access to following the re-design of streets and roads following the pandemic.

GSA already has a firm foothold in the homeless community since we launched our pilot project back in 2014. We became a registered charity in 2019 and between January 2023 to January 2024 we have helped over 1,924 people with aid.

GSA was prominent during the global pandemic of 2020 with its frontline work and was nominated for The Queens Award for voluntary services in 2022.

Our partners include The National Lottery, The Charity Service, Tesco bags of help, Asda, The Garfield Western Trust, The Albert Hunt Trust, The Peel Trust, The Duchy of Lancaster Trust, Persimmon Homes, Forever Manchester, Auto Trader and Charity Nest.

Most recently we are pleased to say our friends at The Manchester Airport Community fund have awarded us a grant as part cost toward our new E-Bike project to help us reach our target of £18,000 and launch the project soon.

With our dedicated team of staff and volunteers we are confident GSA can strengthen its position within the homeless community with this new service to reduce the stress and uncertainty that rough sleeping brings.

With your help we can do this.
