We are a charitable organisation that has been involved with the local Belgrave Leicester community since we were first established in the year 2000. Most of our work is for those who live in the areas surrounding our Centre. As a result, we have established a deep connection with people and value all those who use our Centre. Our organisation is completely self-funded as a social enterprise, as is this project, which is why, now that our income generating activities are shut, we are asking for your help.
Our Peepul Meals project provides 1000 meals a week to people who are vulnerable, isolating and NHS workers in need free of charge. The entire project is volunteer run with members of the local community with our staff volunteers involved. Our chefs also as volunteers prepare fresh meals, then our volunteers pack and deliver to people’s doors. Our non-key staff and chefs are presently furloughed but as the Restaurant is shut they volunteer just to prepare and deliver these meals free, while the food costs and overheads can be met by grants and donations.
With the start of this crisis our Chairman Anil Bhanot started to give a lot of thought to the local vulnerable people; there are many elderly people in the area who although they may have children or other relatives they may not live locally. Thus these elder vulnerable people would have put themselves at risk of Covid19 purely to secure food, yet they would be at pains also for abiding by the government guidelines for staying home. He then came up with the idea of using our Restaurant to make and deliver food to them free, as this way they would be encouraged to stay at home which in turn not only protects them but also the rest of the community and helps reduce pressure on the NHS. The importance of the NHS and their double shifts also played on his mind, which is why we also started providing food to NHS workers in need during this difficult time.
Currently we are funding this project ourselves but we are now in great need of funding to help it continue to help people that have been effected in the community. We are a Charity and the staff who work in the Centre subscribe to a charitable ethos.
