Sport in the community

Funding level: Up to £1,000

Description

Our small community tennis club, which is run entirely by volunteers, has doubled its junior membership from 70 to 125 in just 12 months, following encouragement from our local authority and the Lawn Tennis Association. Junior coaching is a major part of our philosophy and with the increased numbers have come, inevitably, an increased number of parents, grand-parents and siblings who come to watch the coaching in progress. Our existing viewing and seating area only allows a view of three of our six courts. This used to be sufficient but no longer is. We would, therefore, like to build another viewing area overlooking the other three courts. This would mean groundworks, a paved area, and wooden seating on an adjacent patch of grass.

Cary Park Junior Tennis Club

Location: Cary Park Tennis Club, Cary Avenue, Torquay

Since taking over the semi-derelict courts from our council, we have had all six courts resurfaced and repainted, floodlights installed on two of the courts, and an entire regeneration of the site and surrounding area. In doing so, we have created a thriving junior tennis club for local children.
