Supporting the younger generation

Funding level: £10,001 to £25,000

Description

Friends of Brent Music Service has been formed to help address the shortfalls in funding specifically for the Evening Ensembles and groups. These are groups of school children who come together to play music in concert bands, woodwind ensembles, orchestras, guitar ensembles, rock bands and choirs throughout the year. We currently have 600 children benefiting from these groups, children who may not normally get the opportunity to play music in such a high quality group environment.

Our service is admired country-wide for its commitment to providing equality of access to excellent music activities to Brent's diverse communities. Part of the reason for the extremely diverse socio-economic and ethnic mix in our ensembles is the modest cost to families. This level of subsidy is not sustainable in the long-term.

We would like to address this by offering bursaries to talented children who would otherwise not be able to afford to pay for musical activities because of family circumstances or hardship. Our bursary will allow up to 100 children in Brent the same access to tuition, instruments, trips and participation in the same high-quality and high profile musical performances as their contemporaries.

£25,000 would allow us to provide instruments and cover ensemble membership fees and the cost of travel to events and performances. It will help part-fund a member of staff to coordinate the bursary awards, liaise with beneficiaries, monitor and evaluate the programme and ensure its smooth running.

Moment of Pride

Brent Music Service provides excellent and varied music tuition and is successful in reaching even sections of the population that other services find difficult to engage. We have a considerable track record of success in this field and currently provide tuition to over 600 children annually.
