Sport in the community

Funding level: £5,001 to £10,000

Aboyne Canoe Club (ACC) are looking to build their own purpose built canoe and kayak storage facility next to the River Dee on Charlestown Road, Aboyne. The facility will consist of a simple corrugated iron (fire resistant) shed with natural lighting, designed to fit in with the Victorian style of the local conservation area.

The club is a constituted club affiliated to the national governing body, the Scottish Canoe Association as well as Aberdeenshire Sports Council. Aboyne Canoe Club is a ClubCAP accredited club and an SCA Focus club (1 of 12 in Scotland) and this project to build a storage facility is supported by the SCA.

The club has been offered a free 10 year lease (and year on year thereafter) on a piece of land on Charlestown Road, Aboyne, which lies adjacent to the river and village green and will provide an excellent location for the storage facility. Plans have been drawn up by a local architect, tree surveys carried out and planning consent received, with support of a grant from the Marr Area Partnership and the club's own fundraising.

There is a need for a facility like this and it will be well used. The club's current home is in a private residence on Charlestown Road. The owner of this residence intends to sell the property and the shed in around two years time. If we are unable to build this facility the clubs £17,000 of equipment will be homeless and the club will no longer have a focal point for members to assemble for canoe activities.

We would like to win £10,000 to put towards the nice finishing touches for the shed and for the specific canoe and kayak racks required.

Aboyne Canoe Club

Moment of Pride

The club is truly a family club with nearly 50% male/female members and 50% adults/children. All club members support this project, currently 177 members. This project will not just physically build a shed to store our kit, it will make the club more visible and allow us to expand what we offer.
