Health and wellbeing

Funding level: £1,001 to £5,000

10 million tonnes of food and drink is thrown away in homes, supermarkets, shops and restaurants in the UK every year. At the same time, there are approximately 8 million people in the UK living in food poverty, unable to feed themselves and their families a healthy, nutritious meal.

Keep Cornwall Fed is a social enterprise catering company with two aims - to reduce food waste and end food poverty. We set up this year aiming to sell 5000 meals and give 5000 meals back to people living in food poverty using waste and surplus food. We hit our target of selling 5000 meals in 8 months, and have already given 1300 meals back. Now, we are looking to scale up our operation: invest in cooking and storage equipment that will allow us to take in-season surplus from our network of local growers and suppliers, to cook and store ready meals made from surplus food that would otherwise be thrown away. Our vision is to pioneer a system of ready meals made from fresh surplus food that can be distributed to charities and organisations that may have limited cooking skills or facilities, but that need healthy, nutritious, hot food year-round for clients and service users who would otherwise go hungry. In a rural area such as Cornwall, this would allow us to grow our reach exponentially, and impact so many more people. This system could also be rolled out to foodbanks, as a way of providing more nutritious, hot food to people in bedsits and temporary accommodation that have no cooking facilities.

Alongside this, we would like to offer basic cooking skills to people, allowing them to learn how to better feed themselves on a low income. We have the skills and experience to do this, but require more equipment, more time and a larger premises eventually. We are based in St Austell, Cornwall, where there are high levels of deprivation, and low incomes. Our aim is to end holiday hunger in Cornwall, to reduce food waste and help people feed themselves better. By involving people in the cooking process when we're giving back, we teach them how to cook healthy nutritious food on a budget, and how to waste less food. As trained chefs with over 20 years experience, using every part of an ingredient is simply how we were taught to cook, and these are skills that we would like to pass on to the next generation. Many of the young people that we meet are unable to cook as they have never learnt. We want to change that through offering workshops and training opportunities. We have started to do this with local scout groups, youth clubs and other charities, and would like to expand this side of our work to include even more training opportunities and cookery classes.

Be part of the vision and vote for us! End food waste and food poverty in Cornwall. #wearethe5000
