Description

Can you remember your first year at Secondary school? Daunting, wasn't it?!
Thornden School welcomed its new 2017 Year 7 intake to an area set aside for them to grow into; a 'before' picture is attached of the rather uninspiring space it was - as well as the lovely space it is becoming.
Over the summer holiday a fantastic team of parents, staff, kids and members of the community came together to begin to transform what had been the old Fishpond Courtyard into an area for the Year 7s to come and meet up, socialise and feel secure, right in the heart of the School.
With a seed fund of just £750 from the PTA (Friends of Thornden School) the 'Courtyard Crew' bought materials, recycled planters from 1p pallets, painted and restored seating and produced metres of bunting to make an amazing start and a welcoming space. All the money was spent but there is still a lot of work to do.

Now the year 7s are hoping to develop the space further and fully make it their own.
Some of their wishes include some giant outdoor games like chess and jenga to help everyone feel included and facilitate friendship across the tutor groups.
There is a dark corner that is crying out for a shed to store games and gardening tools for pupils to access. Planters need to be filled and more seating sourced.
There are further areas of shrubs, weeds and Leylandii to deal with, plus in the summer we probably need to think about parasols and shade.

As you can see from the photos, we have achieved a good deal already on a very tight budget and as much as possible has been sourced for very little money or for free.
We can assure you that any money kindly donated from the Aviva Community Fund will be absolutely pushed to the limits by means of reusing, recycling and repurposing. This will go towards developing a space which will then hopefully be able to welcome the next group of Year 7s in 2018 and in the years to come!

Thanks very much for considering us

The Y7 Courtyard has been an amazing community effort so far! Local people offered plants and soil, benches and paint, gave up time and energy to move tonnes of gravel in their summer holidays and reused and recycled where possible. With some further support, games and storage, it'll be even better!
