Description

Welcome to Highfield County Park of Levenshulme Manchester. This is a beautiful country park right in the heart of Manchester, loved by many people in the community and others across Manchester and beyond. It is very popular with families, dog walkers, walkers, runners, as well as bird/ bat watchers and Horse riders. Many years ago, the land at Highfield was used to extract clay for the manufacture of bricks for the building industry. Today Highfield is looked after by A community Group, The Friends Of Highfield Country Park who work hard to keep the place clean, tidy and safe for all visitors to enjoy. However, we could definitely do with some help. Some simple things we are aiming to fund for at the moment are more bins, more frequent waste removal, work to be done on the swamp area, as it has been vandalized in the past, and regular grass cutting etc.

Our Project:

Our idea is to create a Bee sanctuary garden in Highfield, one that all can enjoy and use as a walk through, and a place to sit and soak up the sun in the beautiful garden. A place where people can be educated and become closer to nature, but most of all for the Bee’s of Manchester! As we all know, our bees need help, and it is vital that we help protect them. The aim is to have as many fruit trees, flowers, plants herbs and grasses that bees can flourish in, whilst creating an elegant space for families and other wildlife to enjoy. There would be a trail, which includes facts about Bee’s, their different species, how they protect us and how we can help protect them.
Bee’s are a symbol of the hard working resilient Mancunian people, and are very close to people’s hearts, so I think this would be a beautiful idea and a wonderful compliment to the beauty of Highfield country park, to bring people and nature together. This space we hope will be used to bring people together, a peaceful sanctuary for people and bee’s and various other living creatures. The park is already used by children for an outdoor teaching camp and day projects in the woods. So this would be a great addition for kids to learn and encourage more children and families to enjoy all that Highfield Country Park has to offer.

What a Difference This Will Make:

We at the Friends of Highfield community group believe that this will make a huge difference to the community of Levenshulme and beyond, as this would provide a place of tranquillity, a peaceful beautiful garden in which visitors and wildlife can enjoy. Where children and adults can be educated and raise awareness of how to help the Bee’s survive. There will also be A herb garden, which visitors and bees will be able to enjoy and use. I don’t think that there are any public flower beds or gardens within the Levenshulme or neighbouring Burnage and Longsight communities, so this would be a priceless addition to the local and wider community. Bees are vital to our health and future on this planet, and it is important that we help them and understand more about them. It is also important that we have a stronger connection with the food that we eat, therefore the garden, herb garden, vegetables and fruit trees would be a great source of organic produce and education for the local community, as well as the benefits of light exercise and fresh air. So many people from all ages, cultures and backgrounds visit this park for all different reasons, and it would be a beautiful compliment to the country park and the people of Manchester.
