Community support

Funding level: £1,001 to £5,000

1st Thurlby Scout Group has been active in the village of Thurlby for over 50 years and we are one of the most successful in our district. As a group consisting of Beaver, Cub, Scout and Explorer sections, supported and run entirely by volunteers, we provide a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities to local children. We currently have 100 members from the surrounding villages, who meet once a week in the village hall.

We aim to provide each child with a range of experiences and teach them new skills throughout their Scouting career. There is a varied programme in place to support this enabling children to grow in confidence, knowledge and achieve their badges. Regular activities include archery, sailing, camping, hiking, craft, cooking and outdoor games plus The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for the older Explorer section.

One of the values of Scouting is that it should be available to all, so for this reason we aim to keep our annual subscription fees low for members. As a non-profit organisation, we actively participate in fund raising and also help marshal the local fun run and other events within our community to help raise our profile.

However, in order to run and participate in activities, a large amount of equipment is required along with transport and storage facilities as we do not have our own Scout Hut. After many years of using a local farmer’s barn for storage, we are now in the position where alternative facilities need to be sought. Therefore, the Group now needs to purchase a storage container to keep the equipment in. Additionally, our customised trailer, which is used to transport equipment to events and camps, needs replacing.

We are looking for funding to purchase this additional equipment and a storage facility so that we can secure the provision of these activities for our Scout Group in the future.

The container (which will house all of our camping equipment and portable cooking equipment to enable the children to cook in an evening activity in a session) and the trailer to transport all of this equipment to camps, sailing, archery etc are part and parcel of our success.

1st Thurlby (St Firmin) Scout Group

Our group success is down to our expert leadership team, young leaders and parent helpers giving up their time to ensure the youth of today have the opportunity to do something amazing for which I am extremely proud to be able to do.
