Community support

Funding level: Up to £1,000

Formed by the merger of two of the oldest hockey clubs in London, each weekend Bromley and Beckenham Hockey Club field 9 Men’s teams and 5 Ladies teams. The Men’s 1st XI currently play in the South Premier Hockey League whilst the Ladies' 1st XI play in the East Division 1 South. The remaining 8 Men’s sides, including a Vets and SuperVets side (we support the oldies too! compete in the London and Kent Leagues. The Ladies' 2nd XI compete in East League Division 2 South East and the remaining 3 Ladies' sides compete in Kent Leagues.

Junior development is viewed as critical for future success of the Club and has a thriving section with around 300 youngsters aged 8 to 18 participating each weekend. We’re a hard working club that supports youth development in the community and have a number of ties to local schools and are setting up partnerships with the other leading hockey schools in the area to encourage greater participation. Above all the Club is part of the local area – we very much see ourselves as integral to the community and hope that this association will grow as the Club does.

The club recently invested £300,000 in a new hockey pitch. The club raised £100,000 through a mixture of fundraising, loans and donations. The project was also supported by £150,000 from Sport England and £50,000 from England Hockey. The pitch was opened by Team GB Goalie Maddie Hinch in 2016, fresh from securing the Olympic Gold Medal. The pitch is allowing us to provide more hockey opportunities during the week and during school holidays for the local community.

The Club has a number of long term objectives, which this Aviva Community Fund will help support:

+ Continue to build our first class playing facilities – including changing rooms next to our new pitch and building partnerships with schools and other facility owners across the borough to ensure these facilities are refurbished regularly.

+ Become a hockey centre of excellence for London and the South East – we will continue to develop our coaches (many of whom are volunteers), encourage new volunteers to get involved, create a more comprehensive junior performance program and introduce tours for all ages.

+ Gain promotion to the National Premier League - both our Mens and Ladies first team have been recently relegated from the elite level of hockey in England (the National League), by investing in performance at all levels we hope to return to this level of performance.

+ Become the coaching partner to schools in Bromley and South East London - work with local government to become a preferred supplier and build relationships with schools.

Funding for new equipment, volunteer recruitment and training is always hard to come by, so we would put money from this fund towards hockey sticks, balls, bibs, training aids and goal-keeping kit as well as coaching and umpiring training. Many of our coaches and umpires are volunteers, we want to encourage their support and meet the needs of our growing membership.

We have a fantastic team of volunteers who run the club and dedicate time and efforts into ensuring that young people and adults alike have the opportunity to participate in sport and physical activity, the Aviva Community Fund can help us take another step towards our goals.

Bromley and Beckenham Hockey Club

Moment of Pride

I've played with Bromley and Beckenham Hockey Club for over 10 years, their members were my lifeline to a community when I moved to the area and didn't know anyone. To say thanks, I've been a volunteer on their small, hard working committee who work tirelessly

Location: Beckenham
