Health and wellbeing

Funding level: £5,001 to £10,000

St Mary's is a small one form entry primary school in Royston, Hertfordshire and we are proud to be recognised as Outstanding by OFSTED in December 2017. We aim for and achieve high academic standards through an enriched curriculum where our children feel nurtured and cherished. OFSTED stated:
"leaders and teachers recognise the motivational effect that outdoor learning has on all pupils"

We strive for continued excellence and are looking to develop an outdoor sensory area for our children, especially those with special educational needs. The area will be created by the children for the children and will provide an array of sights, smells, textures and a sound zone. This will provide a safe and stimulating environment for all children to develop and engage their senses. It is a place of calm, learning and reflection, to be used by our school and wider community in many different ways.

Our special needs children have many complex needs but their love and enthusiasm for life shines through and we want to give them every opportunity to develop their learning and life skills. The children will be involved in the area from planning, through creating to using. It will allow them to use many different skills and apply them to a variety of curriculum areas. It is exciting for children to be involved in all aspects of the sensory area and they have the most fantastic ideas. They would like to create a seaside area, turning a shed into a beach hut, painting sea and beachscapes on the wall, planting long grasses and bamboos to create sand dunes and shingled beach area. This will provide the children with so many cross curricular opportunities for learning and their enthusiasm for learning will continue to grow.

Our school facilities are used by a number of community groups including a very busy After school club, Holiday club and St John's Ambulance, whose members would also benefit from this sensory and safe area. Our links with the Church would also provide opportunities for elderly members of the community to visit our Sensory Area too allowing them to interact with the world around them and enjoy the benefits of this special place. They may enjoy some time with our children sitting and sharing books or simply watching the children at work and play.

In a difficult time of funding restraints, cuts and decreasing school budgets the money would allow us to provide this excellent opportunity for the school and local community to make memories and forge stronger links.

Moment of Pride

The ideas have come from the children to benefit not just themselves but the whole community. Showing they think of others whilst allowing their ideas to become a reality.
