Health and wellbeing

Funding level: Up to £1,000

Description

For over 20 years local kids have played football between two goal posts on Churchfield (Wiggy Park). It is used all year round and the area has lost all its grass and when wet it is a muddy mess. The committee have decided to raise funds to provide an all- weather artificial turf surface.

We will have a surface that can be used for football kick abouts , activities such as hoop sports and keep fit sessions. All the improvements we have made to the park in recent years have had inclusivity as an important part of our plans. This "Kick About" project means that wheelchair users, along with adults and kids with various degrees of ability and disability will be able to have full access to this facility. Funds from Aviva will go towards the maintenance of this project.

Our park is used by residents from Wigginton and our neighbours from Haxby, together they have a population of over 12,000. Much has been said about the growing obesity problem particularly among our young people; parks are the ideal place to encourage exercise and social interaction. As the all-weather pitch will be unaffected by inclement weather this project will be another step to encouraging healthy outdoor activity for a greater part of the year.

Although our locality has a relatively low crime rate, we do experience some anti- social behaviour, this is often caused by lack of amenities for young people and again our project will help to address this.
