Health and wellbeing

Funding level: £1,001 to £5,000

To set up a Saturday morning 5k parkrun in my home town of Sevenoaks. The set up costs are £3000, this covers everything from initial training, 24/7 support, laptop with built in bespoke parkrun software, scanners, timers and all event safety equipment including high visibility clothing.

My town of Sevenoaks has roughly 120,000 residents, whose nearest parkrun is in either Lullingstone or Orpington both being roughly 6 miles away.

For those not familiar with parkrun, parkrun is a free, timed weekly event suitable for all abilities, that has been growing in strength since it was founded 14 years ago.

Each event is run by volunteers, with a core group consisting of one or more Event Directors, who are overall in charge of the event, Run Directors who take it in turns to supervise the weekly runs and other members who can attend regularly and help out as required. On top of the core group each event needs volunteers to act as marshals and to do other jobs like scanning and timekeeping.

Sevenoaks has several green spaces which could be the home of Parkrun here. As a regular member of Parkrun, I can testify to Parkrun doing wonderful things towards physical and mental well being. Parkrun is a welcoming environment for people of all ages and abilities, emphasising that it’s a “run not a race” and the post-Parkrun opportunity to socialise over coffee is integral to the whole occasion.

I already have a few key members interested in being core team members and know that many local people would get involved. I will also get in touch with the 4 Secondary schools in our area as this will be a good provider for students taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme or students on Sports leadership courses.

I anticipate initially up to 100 people will take part in the weekly runs and believe that number will at least double within the first year.

Moment of Pride

Parkrun is a worldwide phenomenon, which in just a few years has spread across the UK, Europe, America, Asia, Africa and Australasia. It works because it brings people of all types together to exercise in a fun and social way. I cherish the opportunity to spread the Parkrun love one step further!
