Eldean Forest School Project!
Our main project objectives are to extend and improve the current forest school area to enable more community groups, alongside the school, to utilise the space without causing a negative impact to the environment.

As you can see from the photos the space we have is overgrown in some areas, sparse in others and, without clear pathways, plants are getting trodden upon.

Currently children at Duston Eldean Primary School in Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 use the forest school area for weekly lessons. A KS2 group and an after-school club are also offered by the school.

The neighbouring preschool Eldean Childcare (a non-profit organisation) would like to use the Forest area also for pre-schoolers and holiday clubs enabling even more children to benefit from learning outdoors all year round.

We would use the Aviva fund contribution to ensure the Forest School area is safe and sustainable – we need to create designated pathways which will be edged and mulched. This is to prevent the natural flora and fauna from being trampled.

We would also like to build a permanent fire circle, and purchase fire safety kits – we would like to buy large logs and planks to make seating. A fire circle provides an opportunity for the children to learn to use fire safely, to sing songs and toast marshmallows whilst bringing the group together to share ideas and spark the children’s imaginations. We would also like to purchase 20 heat resistant metal beakers for hot chocolate!

The money requested would also fund a Balance Set – large, long logs to climb and balance on – this will provide a beginners climbing experience and also help to zone the overall Forest School area.

A wide range of benefits can be gained from forest school activities such as sensory stimulation, movement, co-operation and discussion, an increase in self belief, confidence, learning capacity, enthusiasm, communication and problem-solving skills and emotional well-being.

Just a few of the activities we do with the children are: climbing trees, using tools, building shelters and dens, making mud faces, leaf pictures, toasting marshmallows and making fairy houses. The children love to play ‘123 Where Are You’.

The wild, yet controlled, safe environment of Forest School ensures that children taking part naturally learn to assess risk and are encouraged to make sensible and informed decisions about how to deal with new and unpredictable situations. Much of the learning for a child comes as a result of the opportunities they have for testing their own abilities in a real life context. It is important we get the chance to take the children out regularly.

Moment of Pride

We would like to create a sustainable Forest School area for the benefit of the local wildlife and local children. We want as many children as possible to enjoy the outdoor area and learn new life-skills all year round.
